For this Friday’s First Dance song I give you one of my favorite bands, Death Cab for Cutie. The majority of their catalog is not exactly wedding material, and hardly suitable for a dance floor, but Stay Young Go Dancing is just plain sweet. Ben Gibbard’s voice is gentle and sincere and the instrumentation gives the song a lovely mechanical music box kind of vibe. This song is also the rare exception where the lyrics are to be embraced rather than ignored. It isn’t just a nice sounding song.
The chorus is a melodic reminder of what lies ahead: the couple’s future together. It is even, in a way, an echo of most traditional wedding vows. Through Autumn’s advancing we’ll stay young, go dancing. That translates roughly to as we age, as we go through times of sickness and health we will stay together. We will support one another, and we will find reasons to dance even amidst all the reasons not to.Who wouldn’t want to dance to that? Who wouldn’t want to raise a glass to that sentiment? Isn’t that what weddings are all about?
When you strip away all the fanfare and fanciness what you are left with is the future in all its ups and downs, success and failures. What better way to greet that future than to dance right into it and to keep on dancing. There isn’t a better a way.
So as always, happy Friday and happy dancing.
